Global Platform [1] is the international standard which regulates interaction between smart cards and devices and thus provides secure data processing and storage. The cards that support Global Platform standard allow solving any problems and don’t need much functionality of the terminals. Various devices may act as terminals for smart cards. In particular, a mobile phone may be used for GSM-cards.

The main advantages, which made Global Platform standard so popular are the following:

  • Several applications on one card support with the possibility of application parameters dynamic change;
  • Security of application functioning as it is isolated from the other applications;
  • Merchantable ratio Price-Quality- Security;
  • Wide range of standards and technologies support, so it guarantees compatibility of the available terminals with the cards based on Global Platform standard and thus gives perspectives to platform development.

Global Platform specifications are accepted by the majority of state and private companies and organisations in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia. From the moment of its birth in 1999, Global Platform quickly won the leading positions of world standard of smart-card industry.

According to Global Platform technical committee [2] there will be more than 70 million smart-cards based on Global Platform in circulation in 2005, and in addition 450 million GSM-cards which use Global Platform technology for wireless applet loading.

Wide use of Global Platform and its support by the leading world vendors and payment systems chose this platform for application development of Mobile Bank system.
Detailed analysis of Global Platform standards and specifications allowed Intervale’s specialists to use platform possibilities at its maximum.
The platform allows to change parameters of the existing applications and add new applications both before and after release of the card considering security requirements. Mobile Bank System by Intervale enables to change the list of functional possibilities of the system which are available to the client. To hold these changes SMS transport is used. Besides that, technological peculiarities of Global Platform guarantee Mobile Bank application protection from outer interference. Global Platform architecture ensures that the elements of the platform that secure work of card applications, are situated outside the card operational system and outside applications themselves. Interaction of applications and operational system of the card is made via special components — Security Domains. A particular domain is given to each application or group of applications of the card. As a result, it prevents incidental or deliberate interference and so guarantees stable and reliable functioning of Mobile Bank system.

Intervale developed an innovation technology of protection and secure storage of private client data, which is based on Global Platform specifications.
Data exchange between the client and the bank is performed via SMS. To keep SMS-traffic transfer secure, smart-card possibilities on data encoding used in Mobile Bank system. The keys are stored at the client’s SIM-card in Security Domain which controls work of Mobile Bank application and differentiate access to the private information after entering applet PIN-code.

So due to the use of Global Platform standards Intervale created Mobile Bank system which has a number of unique characteristics:

  • Possibility of usage of the applications on the GSM-cards that support Global Platform standards;
  • Key data storage security;
  • System information streams protection.

Originally the standard was called Open Platform. But the more producers and other payment systems such as American Express, JCB, MasterCard International, this initiative by Visa transformed into the international corporation which was named Global Platform.
